Our Employees

Flash back thirty years to 1976: many of our employees had yet to be born. Today they are our Enrollment Counselors, Academic Counselors, Financial Service Representatives, Student Services Coordinators, Campus Directors, Asset Specialists and more.

Thirty years ago the terms “Internet,” and “online,” and “Web-based” were completely unheard of, barely a blip on the horizon. Today, our employees embrace these terms and are expert with knowledge and understanding of the Web-based classes our students attend online. In fact, at the University of Phoenix, our Online Campus has the proud distinction of being a cornerstone of our University and a pioneer/leader of Web-based learning.

What does it take to lead, motivate, challenge, innovate and create? In a word, people. The dedicated people at the University of Phoenix, our human resources, are leaders and challengers. They know what motivates people and they create, perpetuate and enhance innovative programs that feed a desire to learn.

Our people are also moms, dads, sons, daughters, husbands and wives who realize the value of learning and are striving to achieve its rewards. Everyday they balance work and life and we owe our amazing success to them.

The Value of Tenure

- by Terri Bishop, Chief Communications Officer - Apollo Group, Inc.

I have worked for University of Phoenix for over 25 years. My own aging offers me evidence of the passage of time! I started here as a clerk and my desk was a cardboard box and a couch in the reception area because there was not enough space. What keeps me and many of my peers here? For me it has been about thriving on change, believing in our mission, and feeling as though I am able to make a difference, even if at times just a small one.

I have held a variety of positions and created more than a few of my own job descriptions. There were times when I truly loved the job I was in and there were times when I did not. Once I left for a year and came back. I have reported to some excellent managers and I have also reported to a few nightmares but I never felt a lack of opportunity and I always felt I could find another challenge if needed.

So now, I have a theory that I will pass along to anyone who cares to read my musings: There are no perfect organizations, just like there are no perfect people but being part of a growing organization is important because growing organizations provide new jobs, expanded opportunities and challenges for the people in them to keep moving and learning. And if you don’t like something or you know there’s a better way to do something, change it. You can. I have been here for 25 years, but I have never, ever felt as if I have stayed in the same place!
